Measuring Tools

  • Measuring Length
  • Measuring Volume
  • Measuring Area

Measuring Length

  • Length - is the distance between two points.

the SI Unit of length is metre (m) meter.

Example measuring using a ruler.

*Short lengths are measured in cm or mm.

*Long distances are measure in km.

Instrument/Device: Measuring Length

  • Ruler - used to measure the length of short straight lines or objects
  • Measuring Tape - used to measure the length of long straight lines.

Measuring the length of curved (เส้นโค้ง) lines using:

  • Thread (เกลียว) and ruler
  • Opisometer and ruler

*Opisometer - also called a curvimeter, meilograph, or map measurer, is an instrument for measuring the lengths of arbitrary curved lines.

Measuring diameter using:

*Diameter - is any straight line segment that passes through the center of the circle and whose endpoints lie on the circle.

  • Calipers and ruler

*Calipers - is a device used to measure the distance between two opposite sides of an object.

Measuring Area

  • Area - is  the extent of a surface or a plane figure.

the SI unit for area is square metre (m2)

Measuring large areas - square kilometer (km2)

       Measuring smaller areas - (cm2) and (mm2)

Measuring an irregular object:

  • Using a graphing paper.

Measuring Volume

  • Volume - is the amount of space occupied by  a three dimensional object.

unit for volume is cubic metre (m3).

The volume for solids is usually measured in cm3  and m3  units.

The volume of liquids in metric units such as millilitre (ml) and litre (l).

Instrument/Device: Measuring Volume

  • Graduated cylinder - laboratory equipment used to measure the volume of a liquid
  • Burette - a graduated glass tube with a tap at one end, for delivering known volumes of a liquid, especially in titrations.
  • Pipette - used to transport a measured volume of liquid, often as a media dispenser.
