Science Laboratory
Laboratory - is a place where a scientist works.
- students carry out scientific investigations or experiments in science laboratories.
Apparatus - the technical equipment or machinery needed for a particular activity or purpose.
- laboratory apparatus to carry out experiments.
The tools and equipments used used for Chemistry are some of the basic tools used in laboratory. Here are some examples of laboratory apparatus you usually use inside a laboratory.
Laboratory apparatus used for containing, collecting and transferring chemicals:
- Beaker - used to mix, heat or store substances.
- Conical flask - used to mix and store substances and collect filtered substances.
- Test tube - used to mix, store or heat small amounts of substances.
Laboratory apparatus used for measuring the volume of liquids:
- Graduated cylinder - is used for measuring the volume of liquids to an accuracy of 1cm cube.
- Burette - is used for measuring the volume of liquids to an accuracy of 0.1 cm cube
- Pipette - is used for measuring a fixed volume of liquid and placing it into another container.
Laboratory apparatus used for filtering and evaporating:
- Filter funnel - is used for separating insoluble solids from liquids
- Evaporating dish - is used for evaporating excess solvents to produce concentrated solutions.
Laboratory apparatus used for heating:
- A bunsen burner - used to supply flame.
- A crucible is used for heating solids to extremely high temperature.
- A test tube holder is used for holding a test tube when it is hot.
- A wire gauze is used to allow even distribution of heat.
Laboratory apparatus used for holding and supporting apparatus/tools/equipment:
- Retort stand and clamp are used for holding apparatus during experiments.
- Test tube rack is used for holding test tubes in a vertical position.
Laboratory Safety Tips:
- Never enter a laboratory unless a teacher is present.
- Do not eat, drink or taste any chemicals.
- Always follow the teacher’s instructions.
- Never touch chemicals with your bare hands. Use a spatula.
- Read the label of a reagent bottle before using its content.
- Turn of the bunsen burner/lamp after use.
- Do not pour back any unused chemical into its bottle.
- Do not throw solid waste into the sink.
